Call for Presenters & Papers
The theme for the 2011 symposium is "Karst Elevated", with particular emphasis on management of Alpine caves. However, we encourage authors to submit papers on all topics related to the management of caves and karst resources. If you are interested in leading a panel discussion, please contact Jon Jasper (jon@jonjasper.com) (435) 688-3264 (office) or (801) 368-2272 (cell) as early as possible to make arrangements.
Abstract Submission Guidelines
Abstracts are required for all presentations and posters. The deadline for submitting abstracts and biographical sketches is August 15, 2011. Abstracts should be held at a maximum of 250 words and must include all authors' names, the title of the paper, and a brief biographical sketch of the primary author (maximum of 150 words). For proper correspondence, submitted material must also include a contact telephone number and e-mail address. Submit abstracts to Jon Jasper, at: jon@jonjasper.com.
Presentation Guidelines
Presentations will be allotted 20 minutes with a question and answer period. Long presentations will be considered, based upon available time. Please include any request for needed audio-visual equipment. Special needs will require sufficient advance notice.
Poster Session
In addition to oral presentations, we welcome poster presentations. The poster displays may be used for case studies, cave and karst management methodologies, findings of research projects or other topics. There will be a designated time for authors to be available for questions and answers. Poster space is not to exceed 3-feet x 6-feet, including text and illustrations. Posters may be mailed to Timpanogas Cave National Monument, Care of Cami McKinney, RR3 Box 200 American Fork, UT 84003 by September 15, 2011.
Paper Submission Guidelines
The deadline for submitting final papers for publication in the Symposium Proceedings is October 15, 2011.
Text
- Text must be submitted as formatted text; Microsoft Word is preferred. Paragraph formatting and fonts can be at your discretion. Bold face and italics will carry over.
- The first page of the paper must include: the full title of the paper; the name, address, phone number, and e-mail of all of the authors in the order that they should appear; and the topic of the session where it is to be presented.
- Short biographies of each author may be included at the end of the paper.
- End-note works should be cited and placed at the end of the paper just prior to any author biographies.
- Authors are asked to conform to the Publications Style Guide of the NSS Special Publications Committee (http://www.nckms.org/pdf/nss_style.pdf). Papers will be edited consistent with this Guide. Authors should also conform to standard American English, to include:
- Date format: Month/Day/Year.
- Periods and commas are always placed inside the final quote marks.
- For three or more items in a series, a comma is to be used before the and, as this enhances clarification.
- Avoid acronyms and abbreviations, except those that are so universal they have become words (such as GPS.) Most government agencies do not fit into this category.
- Avoid Latin abbreviations and use English equivalents instead. Example: use that is instead of i.e., use for example instead of e.g., and use and so forth instead of etc.
Graphics, Photos, Maps, and Line Art
- Papers with graphics (photos, tables, graphs) should be included as separate files in commonly used file formats (.pdf, .jpg, .tiff, .xls.) For accurate placement of graphics, please include a document with formatted text, such as Microsoft Word or Acrobat PDF.
- All images should be capable of being reproduced at 200 dpi or better.
- All graphics should be properly labeled and include a reference showing proper placement within the text.
- Hard copy submissions are discouraged; however, arrangements may be made as needed.
General
- Submit papers via email or flash drive to Valerie Stratford, Proceedings Coordinator, at: ms_dragonfly@xmission.com. FTP upload available on request.
- Assure the first author's name and the paper's title is included within the file names. If submitting multiple papers, please submit them as separate email messages or separate files.
- To help us reproduce illustration placements as closely to your wishes as possible, please consider including a PDF or hard copy of your final formatted paper.
- Refer to previous Proceedings at http://www.nckms.org/proceed.html to see the format in which your paper will be published.
- Submit your paper promptly. Production of the Proceedings must progress and it does neither you nor your organization any great honor to be represented by an abstract only.
